a southern lady in santorini // part 2

The second half of our holiday in Santorini was even more relaxing than the first part. The weather was absolutely perfect…sunny, gorgeous and the right amount of sea breeze.

Friday: We wanted a change of scenery so we walked down to Albatross for lunch and laid on their beach chairs for a couple hours after our meal. This is one of the best things about Santorini - the restaurants on the beach all have chairs which are either free (if you've eaten at the restaurant) or less than 5 euro. A couple of days before, I noticed a guy giving massages next to King's Cafe on the beach. I had my heart set on getting one, and I decided this was the perfect afternoon for it. I'm not going to lie, it was pretty hard to relax when you are laying on the beach getting a massage and you know loads of people are walking by! But it was still nice and worth the 20 euro. Afterwards, we went back to our hotel and laid by the pool. Before dinner, we had a drink at White Cocktail Bar. Dinner was traditional Greek food at Family Tavern and the food was okay, but shockingly the service was pretty bad. We waited for ages to order, ages for our food and then ages for our bill.

Saturday: We had a bit of cabin fever after 5 days at the hotel, so we thought about taking the water taxi over to Perissa for the day. When we got there, the taxi had just left and we were told it would be another hour for the next one. We decided to go down the beach a bit and watch the people who were cliff jumping. We wanted to do it, but in the end I chickened out! It just looked a little too rocky for my liking. We had a super cheap lunch of chicken gyros (costing us 2.20 each!) and went for a walk around Kamari in search of ice cream. Eventually we ended up back at our hotel and lounged by the ocean for a while. That night we found ourselves at one of the local restaurants for seafood and couldn't help but feel a little disappointed in our meal. It's mostly annoying because the owners/workers at the restaurant all stand outside and ask you to come in, check the menu, etc. This is pretty typical in other countries, but some of the restaurants in Kamari were particularly aggressive….specifically the one we tried out on Saturday night. After that meal we vowed to go back to our favorite places only.

Sunday: We had booked an evening boat cruise but by lunch time, the wind was so bad that it was cancelled! We were bummed, but they rescheduled us for Monday so it wasn't a complete loss. We decided to stay in Kamari again that day and I was happy to just lounge around and read my new book Orange is the New Black (if you love the show, you should definitely read the book!). For lunch we ended up back at our favorite cheap gyro place, Jimmy's. After lunch we had our usual walk around the town and then back to the beach for more relaxing. We went back to Restaurant Almira for dinner that evening and both of our meals were lovely. I had a traditional seafood pasta and we shared pyrgos (mediterranean veggies and feta cheese) as a starter. All in all, it was the most relaxing day of our vacation.

Monday: I was feeling pretty bummed on Monday that our vacation was coming to an end. But I was really excited to be going on our evening sunset cruise. It was a windy day again, but not nearly as bad as Sunday had been. We set sail around 3:30 and the first part was a very bumpy ride on the sailboat. But once we hit the springs, it calmed down a lot and we got out to swim around these 'healing' springs. The water was warm and loads of people were covering themselves in the mud. After the springs, we rode on to a more secluded area where we would have a perfect view of the sunset on the water. We all went out for a swim while the crew cooked a homemade meal for us. The meal was amazing, probably one of the best we had whilst in Santorini, and we all sat and enjoyed our conversation. There was a couple who had just gotten engaged a few days before and a family from Copenhagen. After dinner, we sat out on the boat and watched the sunset. I couldn't help but feel that it really was the perfect way to end our time in Santorini.

On Tuesday, we very slowly packed our things and got ourselves ready for the airport. We weren't ready to leave but my pain was eased by the fact that I would be in Spain the next day for another trip.

I can't say enough great things about Santorini…breathtaking views, amazing food, peaceful days by the sea. We loved traveling around the island and I would definitely recommend you do the same when you travel to Greece. There is so much to see and do.
