a southern lady in santorini // part 1

A few weeks ago, Adam and I spent 7 amazing days on the island of Santorini. We stayed at Kamari beach on the east coast of the island. I won't lie…most of the trip was spent laying on the beach or by the pool, with a cafe freddo and my kindle. We ate some amazing meals, drank some great wine, and just enjoyed being together (and away from the craziness of London). I want to share our favorite restaurants, sites, and experiences while in Santorini, as well as some of my pictures of this beautiful island.

Tuesday: We arrived in Santorini right before lunchtime, and quickly checked into our hotel on Kamari Beach. We stayed at Thalassa Seaside Resort & Suites. Straight away, we knew we were going to have a positive experience at the hotel. Everyone who worked there was so lovely, and the hotel was beautiful. After we checked in and freshened up, we walked down to Restaurant Almira and had a great lunch…our first Greek meal! We laid out on the private beach for a few hours and then decided we were feeling pretty hungry/thirsty again. (And so this began our nightly tradition of grabbing a drink before dinner at the little beach bar at our hotel.) We had dinner at Zabros Tavern and afterwards, we got fish 'pedicures' on the main road in Kamari! It was a fun little experience and I was cracking up the whole time…I have very ticklish feet!

Wednesday: Our first full day in Santorini was spent relaxing at the beach and reading. We enjoyed breakfast at the hotel, had lunch at King's Cafe in Kamari, and dinner at Black Stone. Black Stone (named for the black stone beaches on Kamari beach) was an amazing meal but also really great service. The owner greeted us at the door with a handshake, which I just thought was so nice! Adam tried a special Greek dish (slow cooked goat) and I actually tried a bit…it was really good! Afterwards we grabbed an ice cream and did some star gazing (our nightly ritual).

night #2 in Santorini
Thursday: On Thursday we decided to do a little exploring around the island of Santorini! We rented a Fiat 500 convertible (for just 50 euros), grabbed a map and started driving. I drove the car and it was my first experience driving outside of the US. It was actually really easy - just followed the traffic and remembered which side of the road to stay on! We started our adventure at Red Beach and Akrotiri but stopped along the way to take pictures of the caldera view. We stopped at Perissa (which is just on the other side of the mountain from Kamari) and laid on the beach, had lunch at Atlantis Island restaurant, and then laid out for a bit longer on their beach chairs. After our amazing lunch and rest on the beach, we got back in the car and drove to Fira. We parked up and walked around beautiful Fira and close to Imerovigli. We grabbed a cafe freddo at Galini Cafe and the views were absolutely breathtaking. I wanted to take a hundred pictures, but I just had to stop and enjoy the moment. We walked around for a couple hours, then got back in the car and drove up to Oia. Originally we thought we would watch the sunset from Oia as this is 'the thing to do' in Santorini. But I get really anxious in crowds, and it seemed that every tourist on the island had come to Oia that evening to see the sunset. We walked around for a couple hours, but then decided to head back to Kamari for the night. I'm glad we came back because we ended up having a delicious meal at Sabbia Nera Trattoria.

It was one of those days where I just couldn't believe how lucky I am…to be in one of the most beautiful places in the world with the love of my life.

The second half of Greece was filled with more relaxing, a beach cruise, and a beautiful sunset. I'll be writing about that soon enough though!

xx
