a southern lady in Sicily // days 3 & 4

Day 3: I woke up at 2 am…my body seems to be on fire and I can't stop scratching. I turn on the light to discover my legs and arms covered in red hives and small bumps. I was awake for a couple hours, tossing and turning, worrying about what was wrong with me. I have NEVER had this happen to me before…I take it as a sign that I am definitely vitamin D deficient. I finally fell back to sleep and on Wednesday morning went straight to the pharmacy to get something to help with the itchiness. I was wearing a sweater and when I pulled it open to show the pharmacist my chest and neck, her response was 'OH rosso!' Bless her - she ended up selling me a cream that cost 17 euro but worked a miracle. A few cool showers, some of my special cream, and a little time in the shade was all it took. By Wednesday evening I was feeling 100 times better.

I wasn't going to let a little sunburn ruin my day though -- Courtney and I found the Blue Sky Cafe on the palazzo the perfect place to sit in the shade and relax for a few good hours. We snacked on gelato and brioche, and drank lattes while we sat and people watched.

After our super healthy breakfast (sarcasm at it's finest, people) we made our way around for a little walk and then back to our apartment to relax. We hung out on our balcony in the shade. After a few hours, we were hungry again - no surprise there - and we decided it was the perfect time for a pizza (or two!) and some wine. We made our way to Ciao Ciao Ristorante and enjoyed a bottle of rose, two pizzas, and some grilled aubergine for under 25 euro.

We were completely stuffed after our pizza and wine and decided to walk it off around Letojanni. The townspeople probably thought all we did was walk around! We eventually got back to the apartment, had another little session of relaxing on the balcony, before getting ready for our dinner out. The day before, we had gotten an afternoon drink at Gola and we decided to have our dinner there that evening. It was good (not as good as La Polena) but the owner and waiter went out of their way to make Courtney and I have a nice night.
our dessert - we couldn't help but laugh!
Our new friends at Gola tried to convince us to stay up late and drink wine and hang out, but Courtney and I only cared about going to sleep (especially me since I hadn't gotten much sleep the night before!)

Day 4: I woke up completely hive-free and ready to do some more sunbathing! We were set to leave Letojanni at 3 and make our way to Palermo for our early flight Friday morning. But we were lucky to have a few good hours at the beach before that happened. We started our day at Niny Bar with lattes, yogurt and strawberries and a sweet orange cake for breakfast.

After breakfast, I laid out in the sun for a few hours before getting ready to head to Palermo. We hopped on the train to Messina, then caught the bus from there to Palermo. But while we were on the train, we went through Taormina, which was absolutely stunning.

Overall, Letojanni was a beautiful town and a great place to stay. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet, beach vacation. Besides the beach and restaurants, there isn't much else to do there. But it was perfect for what Courtney and I wanted -  a few days of no cares in the world!
